Bryngarw House is thought to have been built in the 15th century and used as a farmhouse; although there is no documentation, there is some architectural evidence to support this theory.
In 1775 John Popkin gave the House and its grounds to his sister Frances as a wedding present when she married into the Traherne family; the building appears to have been extensively modified during their residence.
In 1910 Captain Onslow Powell Traherne used his wealth to develop an Oriental garden in Bryngarw’s grounds. He introduced many exotic plants and trees, such as the tulip tree, handkerchief tree, magnolias and sequoias.
In the late 1940s, the estate was sold to a local businessman, R S Hayes. He and his family lived in the House until his death in 1959 when it was sold and acquired by the then Ogmore and Garw District Council.
In 1993 Bryngarw House was transformed into a hotel with 19 bedrooms and, with the addition of the conservatory, a restaurant. It was granted a license to hold weddings and became a popular venue for conferences and seminars.
